These boxes were used to store old religious manuscripts in Jain temples. Being that the manuscripts were of a standard size so were the boxes that held them. Every once in awhile the temple holds auctions to raise funds for newer projects and thus these and other temple pieces come on the market. All have original red painted background with Mughal and floral patterns. This box has two elephants, trees and a deity painted on the top lid, very unusual for these pieces.
