StoneHouse Artifacts carries a large selection of ‘Uruli’,’Urli’ or ‘Varpu’ of many different sizes and ages. Though most commonly called Uruli’s those that have the unique decorative handles along the rims these cooking vessels are also known as Varpus. Artisans in Kerala used the ancient lost wax method to make these large and heavily casted bronze cooking pots. Commissioned for religious or family events these pots have lasted many generations passing down as family heirlooms for hundred of years. Placed directly on open flames for the family’s cooking, many have a patina has built up from years of use. In India today they are often used to display fresh cut flowers floating on surface of the water filled vessel.
Varpu/Urli #3
Artisans use the ancient Lost Wax method to make these pots. The designs are very old and have been passed down for generations, which makes them hard to date. Wonderful for filling with water and floating flowers in for display. This one is very heavy with a nice patina and golden interior.
